“EM” meaning electro-magnetic and “Sella”, the Latin word for chair. The first EmSella in Waco, our electromagnetic chair stimulates, strengthens and lifts the pelvic floor in 6 treatment sessions of 28 minutes each. Patients remain fully clothed and comfortable. The sensation is unusual, but not painful, and is individually tailored to your needs and the intensity you can best tolerate.
We use this device to improve or resolve both stress and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is diagnosed when patients experience leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing, and lifting (or jumping, laughing, and working out!). Urge incontinence occurs when the urge to urinate is followed quickly by leakage of urine, regardless of whether you had time to make it to a toilet. Each of these scenarios can result in embarrassment, avoidance of social situations or sexual intimacy, the financial burden of absorbent pads or underwear, and decreased quality of life. Incontinence affects 1 in 4 women, but in studies only 25-60% of affected women ever inform their doctor. Many women experience these symptoms in the postpartum period, when they are already exhausted and struggling with the new or increasing demands of motherhood. Older patients feel that these changes are just the normal consequences of aging and childbirth. We want to take away the stigma and have the opportunity to improve or cure incontinence issues, without any embarrassing internal devices. The EmSella was superior to vaginal TENS units in studies, and creates more organized pelvic floor contractions in less time than traditional pelvic floor therapy – in a fraction of the time. Another program on the device is designed for sexual function. In strengthening the pelvic floor, orgasms become stronger and easier to achieve. Improved blood flow to the pelvis and vaginal tissues results in better lubrication and decreased uncomfortable friction. These changes provide improved sexual function and more enjoyment of sexual intimacy.
EmSella has been studied in post-prostatectomy patients to improve the urinary “dribbling” that can be an unfortunate side effect of the surgery. Male incontinence products are a rapidly growing market, unfortunately. Improving the strength of the pelvic floor can reduce or eliminate the need for these products. We have also seen a tremendous decrease in middle of the night trips to the bathroom, resulting in better sleep. In addition, due to the vascular stimulation from EmSella, a significant percentage of patients are experiencing a return of morning erections and improvement in strength of erections with intercourse. There are several studies that show improvement in younger patients with erectile dysfunction. Again – our focus is on improving quality of life – in spite of aging and necessary medical interventions!
